Schooner, Inc

Schooner, Inc. is a private, non-profit marine education organization dedicated to the conservation of the environment, particularly Long Island Sound and the rivers of Connecticut, and appreciation of their culture, history and future. They operate the Quinnipiack, a 91-foot sailing vessel. Students on board learn sailing, seamanship, marine biology, water chemistry, local history and a variety of other subjects. Schooner offers Shore Programs, Boat Programs, Classroom Programs, or combinations of these. They will also offer customized programs to meet curricular goals.

Groups of students, K-12, can participate in hands-on, educational shore explorations of life in the salt marshes, sandy beaches, rocky intertidal areas and mud flats, either at a field site at Lighthouse Point, or a field site of their choice. Programs can be brought into classrooms, .and can include live marine animals, hands-on water experiments, and stories of the sea. Shore programs can be used as a follow-up to classroom programs.

Teacher Preparation:
Schooner’s staff of trained marine and maritime educators will discuss curricular needs and come up with a program that will fulfill these needs. Schooner will come to a school with a classroom presentation as an introduction to marine life or as part of a unit of study. Through a grant from the Watershed Fund, in partnership with the Regional Water Authority, Schooner, Inc. is hosting a set of water science loan boxes. Loan boxes combine age appropriate literature with environmental science activities for children in grades Kindergarten and up that enrich water science learning. The loan boxes may be borrowed for one week. Boxes are available free of charge to schools and groups in the Regional Water Authority's district. Please call the Whiney Water Center for more information and scheduling – 203-777-1142.
