Partners in Science Peabody Museum of Natural History, New Haven, CTThe Peabody Museum of Natural History is part of Yale University in New Haven, CT. Although best known for its dinosaur collection, this museum has extensive exhibits of the flora, fauna, geology and peoples of the world, including 8 dioramas of habitats in North America. Students can experience the museum either by self-guided tours or by guided group tours. The guided tours focus on a particular exhibit. The instructor leads a discussion about the content of the exhibit and, where appropriate, passes around specimens for the students to handle. Topics offered for the guided tours support the 2004 CT Core Science Curriculum Framework and include rocks, minerals, fossils, plants, animal adaptation, evolution, extinction and habitats. The Museum also offers many possibilities for enrichment especially about dinosaurs. In addition, the Peabody Museum often hosts special exhibits that students may view as the focus or as part of their field study. For a complete schedule, please contact the museum. The staff is continually updating the museum’s programs and will also develop programs to fit the needs of individual schools. This list is not intended to be a complete listing. The Museum also offers Professional Development Workshops for teachers throughout the year. These workshops, which vary from a few hours to a full week, cover a variety of science related topics. In addition, the Museum staff usually offers teachers a chance to preview the visiting exhibits and learn more about them at special workshops.
